Aluminium played a central role in the develop of Marghera industrial area. S.A.V.A. (Società Anonima Veneta Alluminio) was one of the most important aluminium manufacturers in Porto Marghera. It was there since the 20s and it decided to open a new modern unit during the 60s, because of a favourable economic situation. Between 1964 and 1968 the complex was built on a 36 hectares area, in the so called "third industrial area" of Marghera. The plant produced electrolytic aluminium in a 800 meters long rolling mill, provided with hot rolling, milling and heat-treatment machineries. In 1973 a share of 50% was acquired by a state interest company called EFIM, while the rest remained in the hands of S.A.V.A.. During the first decade the factory produced 50.000 tons of semi-finished products and 30.000 tons of aluminium. In the following years, aluminium market reorganization forced the company to invest in technologies, to avoid marginalization and failure. Millwork was the S.A.V.A. core business, and it was decided to improve the rolling mill, considered one of the most advanced of Italy. Investments made between 1986 and 1987 increased the production capacity from 50.000 to 71.000 tons of rolled products. Concerning the installed power this plant was the third in Europe, but its capacity was too less exploited. To resolve these problems in 1988 was approved a renovation program based on high technology modernizations. Unfortunately, in the same year, the private share of S.A.V.A. was definitively acquired by EFIM, and the name was changed in Alumix. The renovation program was set aside and EFIM, commonly called "the trash company" because of its bad managing, was liquidated a few years later, in 1992. This fact meant the ceasing of activities for S.A.V.A., leaving on the street 240 workers on May 31, 1992.
