1979 - Asbestos-cement pipes production line

In 1908 "Società Cementifera Italiana" (Italian Cement Company) established its own cement plant in the outskirts of Broni. From 1932 it begun to produce asbestos-cement, discovered in 1901 by Ludwig Hatschek and patented as Eternit. The factory was built right next to the cement plant, and the company changed its name in "Società Cementifera Fibronit". It goes until 1981, when the company was separated in two divisions: cement production and asbestos-cement one, first one controlled by Italcementi, second one by Fibronit. Fibronit plant closed forcedly in 1993, after the enactment of a national law that forbidden asbestos uses.

From 1932 to 1993, 3798 people passed through the asbestos-cement factory, both men and women. Of these, two hundreds died - and many will die - because of asbestos exposure. The peak of deaths is foreseen for 2015.
